10 Signs You're Running on Empty (And How God Gently Calls You to Rest)

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Have you ever felt exhausted before your day even started?

Not just physically tired, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually drained?

Maybe you've been carrying responsibilities that no one else sees. You're taking care of your family, showing up for work, trying to stay strong for everyone around you, and keeping a smile on your face—even when you're struggling on the inside.

If that's you, I want you to know something before we go any further.

You're not alone.

I've been there too.

There was a season of my life where I felt like I was simply surviving. I would wake up exhausted, go to work feeling drained, come home with no energy, and repeat the same cycle the next day. I was carrying anxiety, past hurt, family stress, rejection, and questions about where my life was headed. I constantly wondered why I felt so different from everyone else.

For a long time, I believed that if I just worked harder, stayed busier, or ignored how I was feeling, things would magically get better.

They didn't.

Instead, I learned that burnout doesn't always happen because you're doing too much physically. Sometimes it happens because you've been carrying too much emotionally for far too long.

Looking back now, I can see that God wasn't disappointed in me for being tired.

He was gently inviting me to rest.

That doesn't mean every problem disappeared overnight. Healing has been a journey for me, and I'm still growing every single day. But I've discovered something beautiful along the way: God often meets us in our weakest moments, not our strongest ones.

If you've been feeling like you're running on empty lately, here are ten signs that may help you recognize it—and how God lovingly calls us back to His peace.

A Quick Note

Before we begin, I want you to know that I'm sharing my personal experiences and what God has been teaching me throughout my own healing journey. Every person's story is different, and this article isn't meant to replace professional medical, mental health, or spiritual guidance. If you're struggling with your mental health or overall well-being, I encourage you to seek support from a qualified healthcare professional, counselor, pastor, or trusted mentor. I believe God can work through many forms of support, and asking for help is a sign of strength—not weakness.

1. You Wake Up Feeling Exhausted Every Morning

This was one of the biggest signs for me.

Even after sleeping, I still woke up feeling tired.

I'd get ready for work, but inside I felt like I had already run a marathon before my day even began.

For me, it wasn't just physical exhaustion.

It was emotional exhaustion.

I was carrying anxiety about my future, replaying painful memories, worrying about situations I couldn't control, and constantly wondering if I was enough. On top of that, I had experienced rejection in friendships, relationships, and even within family dynamics. Little by little, all of those things began weighing on me.

I didn't realize how much stress my heart was carrying until my body started responding to it.

Maybe you've experienced something similar.

Sometimes exhaustion isn't because you're lazy.

Sometimes it's because you've been strong for too long.

One of the biggest lessons God has been teaching me is this:

You don't have to carry everything by yourself.

As I've grown closer to Him, I'm learning to surrender what I can't control instead of allowing it to consume my peace. I'm learning that it's okay if I don't fit in everywhere. God didn't create me to be like everyone else—He created me to be myself.

If you're waking up tired every day, don't ignore it.

Ask yourself:

"What burden have I been carrying that I need to give to God?"

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28

2. Everything Feels Like Too Much

Have you ever looked around your room and thought,

"I know I need to clean… but I just can't."

I've been there.

There was a season where even small tasks felt overwhelming.

Watering my plant.

Cleaning my room.

Doing my hair.

Exercising.

Cooking.

Sometimes I barely had the energy to do any of it.

For a while, I thought something was wrong with me.

But I eventually realized I wasn't lazy.

I was overwhelmed.

Stress, anxiety, depression, and unresolved pain have a way of making even the smallest responsibilities feel impossible.

As I've continued growing in my relationship with God, I've noticed something changing.

Not because life suddenly became perfect.

But because my heart has slowly started becoming lighter.

I'm taking better care of myself.

I'm becoming more intentional with my routines.

I'm learning that healing doesn't usually happen all at once—it happens one small decision at a time.

If today all you can do is wash one dish, take one walk, or spend five minutes talking to God, that's okay.

Small steps are still progress.

And if no one has told you lately...

There is hope.

No matter how heavy life feels today, this isn't the end of your story.

3. You Feel Guilty Whenever You Rest

Can we be honest for a second?

Why is it that sometimes resting makes us feel guilty?

I'll sit down to relax, and within minutes my mind starts racing.

"Ashanti, you should be cleaning."

"You should be working on your business."

"You should be doing something productive."

Sound familiar?

For years I believed my value came from how much I accomplished.

If I wasn't constantly doing something, I felt like I was wasting time.

But God has been changing my perspective.

Rest isn't laziness.

Rest is stewardship.

Just like we charge our phones before they die, our minds and bodies need time to recharge too.

Jesus Himself stepped away to rest and pray.

If the Son of God made room for rest, why do we think we have to earn it?

These days I'm learning to enjoy slower moments.

Making a cup of coffee.

Reading a good book.

Playing a cozy video game.

Watching a comforting TV show.

Spending quiet time with God.

Those moments aren't distractions from life.

They're part of living it.

Friend, you don't have to earn permission to rest.

God already gave you that invitation.

4. You've Lost Interest in Things You Once Loved

This one broke my heart when I finally recognized it.

There was a time when I stopped enjoying almost everything that used to make me smile.

Gaming.

Reading.

Taking pictures.

Writing music.

Recording funny videos.

Spending quality time with family.

Creating.

Learning new things.

Stress had slowly stolen my joy without me even realizing it.

When you're constantly surviving, it's hard to make room for things that make you feel alive.

But something beautiful has been happening lately.

As I've continued healing and trusting God, I've started rediscovering those parts of myself again.

I've found myself enjoying hobbies I loved as a child.

I'm becoming more curious again.

More creative.

More present.

And honestly?

I think that's one of the sweetest parts of healing.

God isn't only restoring our peace.

Sometimes He's restoring our joy too.

If you've stopped doing the things you once loved, don't pressure yourself to jump back into everything overnight.

Choose one small thing this week that brings you genuine joy.

Read a chapter of a book.

Take a walk.

Bake something.

Color.

Play your favorite game.

Laugh with someone you love.

Healing often begins with giving yourself permission to enjoy life again.

And that's a beautiful gift from God.

5. You're Constantly Comparing Yourself

Whew...this one used to have a strong hold on me.

If I'm being honest, I used to compare myself to almost everyone.

I'd compare my life to people who seemed more successful.

I'd compare my relationships to couples I saw online.

I'd compare my career, my appearance, my confidence, and even my timeline.

From the outside, I probably looked okay.

But on the inside, I constantly wondered if I was falling behind.

Social media can make it seem like everyone else is getting married, buying houses, traveling the world, starting businesses, or living their dream life while you're still trying to figure things out.

But here's what God has been teaching me.

Comparison will always make you forget what He's doing in your own life.

Everyone has a different story.

A different background.

Different struggles.

Different timing.

Different gifts.

Different callings.

When I started spending less time comparing and more time getting to know who God created me to be, something changed.

I started discovering what I actually enjoy.

I realized I genuinely love reading, cozy gaming, photography, journaling, fashion, decorating, blogging, and learning new things. Some of those interests had been buried under years of stress, but God has slowly been bringing them back.

I still catch myself comparing sometimes because I'm human.

But now I remind myself:

God isn't asking me to become someone else. He's teaching me to become the woman He created me to be.

If you're constantly comparing yourself today, remember this:

Someone else's blessings don't take away from yours.

God knows your name, your story, and your timing.

Trust Him with it.

6. You're Emotionally Numb

This one hits close to home.

There was a season where I felt like I had completely shut down emotionally.

After heartbreak, rejection, stressful family situations, bullying, and feeling like I never quite fit in, I became numb.

Not because I wanted to.

But because my heart had been carrying pain for so long.

Sometimes trauma doesn't always make us cry.

Sometimes it makes us stop feeling altogether.

I remember wondering if I would ever feel like myself again.

Would I ever laugh the same way?

Would I ever trust people again?

Would I ever truly enjoy life?

Looking back now, I can honestly say that God has been healing places in my heart that I didn't even realize were wounded.

Not overnight.

Not all at once.

But little by little.

That's one thing I've learned about healing.

It usually happens one step at a time.

One prayer.

One healthy boundary.

One counseling session.

One honest conversation.

One act of forgiveness.

One day at a time.

Today, I'm still growing.

There are still areas of my heart that God is working on.

But I also see evidence of His faithfulness.

I'm laughing more.

I'm smiling more.

I'm becoming more hopeful about the future.

I'm learning to love myself in ways I never knew how before.

If you've been emotionally numb, please don't believe you'll stay that way forever.

Healing is possible.

And God is patient with every step of your journey.

7. Your Time With God Starts Feeling Like Another Task

Can I be honest?

I've had seasons where my prayer life felt rushed.

I'd pray quickly before moving on to the next thing.

Sometimes I'd read my Bible because I felt like I should, not because my heart truly wanted to.

Maybe you've been there too.

Life gets busy.

We're tired.

We're distracted.

And before we know it, our relationship with God can start feeling like another item on our to-do list.

Thankfully, God isn't looking for perfection.

He's looking for relationship.

One of the biggest changes in my own faith journey happened when I stopped treating prayer like a checklist and started treating it like a conversation.

Now I talk to God throughout the day.

Sometimes it's a long prayer.

Sometimes it's only one sentence.

Sometimes it's simply,

"Lord...today has been hard."

Or,

"Thank You for getting me through today."

Those simple conversations have brought me more peace than trying to say the "perfect" prayer ever did.

God already knows what's on your heart.

He simply wants you to come to Him honestly.

8. Your Body Is Asking You To Slow Down

Our bodies are incredibly wise.

Sometimes they'll tell us we're overwhelmed before our minds even admit it.

Stress can affect our sleep.

Our appetite.

Our energy.

Our focus.

Our emotions.

Our physical health.

I've learned that constantly pushing myself wasn't making me stronger.

It was making me more exhausted.

Now, when I notice myself feeling overwhelmed, I'm learning to pause instead of pushing through every single time.

Sometimes that looks like stepping away from my laptop.

Sometimes it means taking a walk outside.

Sometimes it's making a cup of coffee and sitting in silence.

Sometimes it's watching a comforting movie.

Sometimes it's taking a nap.

And honestly?

Sometimes it's simply giving myself permission to do nothing for a little while.

For years I thought slowing down meant I was falling behind.

Now I'm learning that slowing down often helps me move forward with a healthier heart.

Listening to your body isn't weakness.

It's wisdom.

9. You're Surviving Instead of Living

This might be the biggest sign of all.

You wake up.

Go to work.

Come home.

Eat dinner.

Watch TV.

Go to bed.

Repeat.

Days begin blending together.

You stop dreaming.

You stop creating.

You stop enjoying life.

You simply survive.

That was my reality for a long time.

I spent years living in survival mode because I was constantly anxious, emotionally exhausted, and stuck in fight-or-flight.

My memory felt foggy.

I felt tired all the time.

Some days I had to call off work because I simply had nothing left to give.

But through therapy, prayer, reading God's Word, and allowing myself to heal instead of constantly hiding my pain, I've slowly started coming back to life.

I've started rediscovering hobbies.

I've started dreaming again.

I've become calmer.

More peaceful.

More hopeful.

Life still isn't perfect.

I still have hard days.

But I no longer feel like I'm only surviving.

If you're in survival mode today, please hear me:

There is hope.

Healing isn't about becoming a different person.

Sometimes it's about becoming the person God created you to be before life convinced you that you had to live in fear.

10. Deep Down, You're Longing For Peace

At the end of the day...

I think this is what we're all searching for.

Peace.

Not a perfect life.

Not unlimited money.

Not a perfect relationship.

Not a life without problems.

Just...

Peace.

I'm still learning this myself.

There are still days when anxiety tries to creep back in.

There are still moments when my mind races.

There are still situations I wish I could control.

But every time those feelings show up, I'm learning to bring them back to God.

I've realized that peace isn't found in having every answer.

Peace is found in trusting the One who already knows the answers.

If you've been longing for peace lately, I don't believe that's something to ignore.

I believe it can be an invitation.

An invitation to slow down.

To breathe.

To pray.

To let go of the pressure to have everything figured out.

To remember that God never asked you to carry every burden alone.

He simply asked you to bring those burdens to Him.

And maybe...

That's exactly where your healing begins.

How God Gently Calls Us to Rest

One of the biggest lessons God has been teaching me over the past couple of years is this:

Rest isn't laziness.

For the longest time, I thought I had to earn rest.

I believed I had to finish every task, solve every problem, make everyone happy, and have my entire life together before I could finally slow down.

The truth?

That day never came.

There was always another responsibility.

Another worry.

Another goal.

Another reason to keep pushing myself.

Eventually, I realized I wasn't just physically tired—I was spiritually exhausted.

God wasn't asking me to work harder.

He was asking me to trust Him more.

I've learned that rest isn't giving up.

It's letting go of the pressure to control everything.

It's saying,

"God, I trust You with the things I can't fix."

That doesn't mean we stop pursuing our goals or ignore our responsibilities.

It simply means we stop believing that everything depends on us.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is simply rest.

Maybe that's taking a walk while talking to God.

Maybe it's putting your phone away for an evening.

Maybe it's taking a nap after a long week.

Maybe it's reading your Bible with no agenda other than spending time with your Heavenly Father.

Maybe it's saying "no" to something that would leave you emotionally drained.

Or maybe it's sitting quietly with a warm cup of coffee, thanking God for another day.

Rest doesn't have to be extravagant.

Sometimes it's found in the smallest moments.

And those small moments can slowly begin healing a tired heart.

A Gentle Reminder for the Woman Who Feels Like She's Running on Empty

If no one has told you this lately, let me be the one to remind you:

You are not lazy.

You are not weak.

You are not falling behind.

You are not failing.

You are a woman who has probably been carrying more than people realize.

Maybe you've been carrying grief.

Maybe you've been carrying anxiety.

Maybe you've been carrying family struggles, heartbreak, financial stress, loneliness, health challenges, or the pressure of trying to hold everything together.

God sees every single burden you've been carrying—even the ones no one else knows about.

And He isn't standing over you disappointed because you're tired.

He's lovingly inviting you to come closer.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible says:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Notice what Jesus doesn't say.

He doesn't say,

"Come back when you've figured everything out."

He doesn't say,

"Come back when you're stronger."

He doesn't say,

"Come back when you've stopped struggling."

He simply says,

"Come to me."

Exactly as you are.

That's the beauty of God's grace.

You don't have to clean yourself up before coming to Him.

You don't have to pretend you're okay.

You don't have to have all the answers.

You can come tired.

You can come anxious.

You can come overwhelmed.

You can come with tears in your eyes and questions on your heart.

God can handle all of it.

And while healing doesn't usually happen overnight, I've learned that every small step toward Him matters.

Looking back over my own journey, I can honestly say I'm not the same woman I used to be.

I'm still healing.

I'm still growing.

I'm still learning.

But I'm also laughing more.

Rediscovering old hobbies.

Trying new things.

Dreaming again.

Learning to love myself.

Becoming more grounded.

Most importantly, I'm learning that my worth isn't found in how productive I am—it's found in whose I am.

That truth has changed everything.
