6 Healthy Habits That Helped My Mental Health Journey

Sometimes when we’re struggling mentally, it can feel impossible to keep up with everyday habits. Even simple tasks like getting out of bed, cleaning your room, taking a shower, or responding to a text message can feel overwhelming. If you’ve ever been in that place, you’re not alone.

There was a time in my life when my anxiety and depression felt extremely heavy. I struggled to sleep at night because my mind was constantly racing. Some days I would cry without really knowing how to explain what I was feeling. I remember feeling disconnected from myself and even avoiding conversations with family because I didn’t have the energy to engage.

Looking back now, I’m grateful that I didn’t stay in that place forever.

My healing journey hasn’t been perfect, and I still have difficult days from time to time. But I’ve learned that healing often comes through small, consistent habits rather than one big breakthrough moment. Little by little, I began making choices that supported my mental wellness, and over time those choices made a huge difference.

These are six healthy habits that have helped me cope with anxiety, manage stress, and create more peace in my everyday life.

1. Taking Breaks From Social Media

Taking a break from social media has been one of the most impactful things I’ve done for my mental health.

For a long time, I spent a lot of time scrolling through other people’s lives. Without realizing it, I was constantly comparing myself to others. I compared my appearance, my accomplishments, my relationships, and even my timeline in life.

Comparison can quietly steal your joy.

The more I scrolled, the more I felt like I wasn’t doing enough or achieving enough. It became exhausting.

When I decided to step away from social media, I noticed changes almost immediately. I felt calmer. I wasn’t consuming hundreds of opinions every day. I wasn’t constantly seeing highlight reels that made me question my own progress.

Instead, I started paying attention to my own life.

I became more grateful for what I already had and more focused on my personal growth. My confidence improved because I wasn’t measuring myself against strangers online.

Of course, healing isn’t perfect. There are still moments when comparison tries to creep back in. But now I remind myself that everyone is on a different journey.

One thing that helped me tremendously was praying and asking God to help me detach from unhealthy habits. I also started filling my time with activities that helped me stay present. Going for walks, spending time with family, reading books, and exploring new places gave me something meaningful to focus on besides scrolling.

The more present I became, the more peaceful I felt.

2. Reading More Often

Reading has become one of my favorite forms of self-care.

There’s something calming about sitting down with a good book and allowing yourself to slow down. Reading helps me step away from stress and focus on one thing at a time.

When my anxiety was at its worst, my attention span felt scattered. I would jump from one thought to another and struggle to focus for long periods of time. Reading helped train my mind to slow down.

I noticed that the more I read, the easier it became to concentrate. My thoughts felt less chaotic, and I found myself feeling more grounded throughout the day.

Another benefit of reading is that it expands your perspective. Whether you’re reading self-development books, faith-based books, biographies, or novels, you’re exposing yourself to new ideas and experiences.

Reading can also be a healthy alternative to spending hours online. Instead of consuming endless content, you’re intentionally engaging your mind in a way that promotes growth and learning.

Even reading for fifteen or twenty minutes a day can make a difference.

3. Playing Cozy & Relaxing Games

Playing relaxing games has been a surprisingly helpful part of my healing journey.

As I’ve worked on my mental wellness, I’ve realized how important it is to reconnect with things that bring genuine joy. For me, many of those things are connected to my childhood.

There was a time when I felt like I had to be productive every second of the day. If I wasn’t working toward a goal, I felt guilty. But healing taught me that rest and enjoyment are important too.

Relaxing games give my brain a chance to unwind.

Whether it’s a cozy game, a puzzle game, a word search, or something simple and fun, these activities help me slow down and take a break from overthinking.

I’ve also found that playing games can help reduce stress because they keep my mind focused on something enjoyable rather than anxious thoughts.

Sometimes healing looks like doing things that make you smile again.

Reconnecting with your inner child isn’t childish—it’s a form of self-care.

4. Cleaning My Space

Cleaning may not sound exciting, but it has had a huge impact on my mental health.

When my environment is cluttered, my mind often feels cluttered too.

There have been days when I felt overwhelmed, unmotivated, and mentally exhausted. During those times, cleaning was usually the last thing I wanted to do. But almost every time I pushed myself to tidy up, I felt better afterward.

A clean space creates a sense of order.

When I organize my room, make my bed, or clear off surfaces, I immediately feel calmer and more productive. It gives me the feeling that I’m taking care of myself and my environment.

Cleaning also helps build discipline. It teaches you to follow through on something even when you don’t feel like it.

You don’t have to clean your entire house at once. Start small. Pick one area and focus on that. Small steps can still create meaningful change.

5. Taking Showers and Practicing Self-Care

Taking showers has become an important part of my self-care routine.

When I’m feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained, a shower helps me feel refreshed and renewed. It’s one of the simplest ways I can care for myself.

After a shower, I usually feel cleaner, more confident, and more motivated to take on the rest of my day.

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes it’s as simple as washing your face, moisturizing your skin, putting on clean clothes, or taking a few moments to rest.

One piece of advice that stuck with me came from my therapist. She encouraged me to pray while showering and say:

“I cleanse all negative energy from my body in the name of Jesus.”

While everyone experiences faith differently, that prayer helped me create a moment of reflection and peace. It reminded me to release stress, worry, and emotional burdens to God.

Even now, self-care remains one of the ways I show myself compassion during difficult seasons.

6. Journaling My Thoughts

Journaling has been one of the most powerful tools in my healing journey.

Sometimes it’s difficult to express emotions out loud. There are moments when I don’t know how to explain what I’m feeling or where to begin.

That’s where journaling helps.

Writing allows me to process my thoughts without judgment. I can be completely honest about what I’m experiencing, and that honesty often brings clarity.

When thoughts stay trapped in your mind, they can feel overwhelming. But when you write them down, they often become easier to understand.

Journaling helps me identify patterns, recognize triggers, and reflect on my growth. It also gives me a record of how far I’ve come.

Some days I journal about my feelings. Other days I write prayers, gratitude lists, goals, or reflections about my healing journey.

No matter what I write, journaling helps me feel more connected to myself.

Final Thoughts

Mental wellness is not about being happy all the time or never struggling again. It’s about finding healthy ways to care for yourself during both good seasons and difficult ones.

Healing takes time, and everyone’s journey looks different. What works for one person may not work for another, but these six habits have helped me find more peace, confidence, and stability in my life.

If you’re currently struggling, start small. Choose one healthy habit and focus on being consistent with it. Over time, those small choices can lead to meaningful changes.

Remember that healing is a journey, not a destination. Give yourself grace, trust the process, and celebrate every step forward—no matter how small it may seem.

Here's a Bible verse:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
